Uganda’s merchandise import bill has registered a significant and sharp increase in September 2025, according to the latest economic data released by the Ministry of Finance. The official report indicates a substantial 43.6 percent rise in the nation’s import expenditure when compared to the figures from the same period in the preceding year, 2024. This notable escalation highlights a considerable expansion in the volume and value of goods entering the country, marking a significant shift in the nation’s trade dynamics. Delving into the specifics, the total value of merchandise imports climbed from US$1,015.6 million in September 2024. This amount, which translated to approximately 3.628 trillion Ugandan Shillings, saw a dramatic upward trajectory. By September 2025, the import bill had surged to a new high of US$1,458.5 million, reflecting the robust growth in imported goods.
