The Human Rights Centre Uganda (HRCU) has reiterated its urgent appeal for the swift enactment of a dedicated Human Rights Defenders Protection Law. The organization issued a significant warning, underscoring that the current lack of specific legal safeguards continues to leave human rights activists across the country highly susceptible to various dangers. The HRCU specifically highlighted that women activists are disproportionately affected, facing an elevated risk of encountering threats, experiencing violence, and enduring systematic intimidation. This precarious situation is particularly alarming as Uganda steadily approaches the 2026 general elections, a period during which such vulnerabilities are often exacerbated, making the need for protective legislation even more critical for those working to uphold fundamental rights.
