Civil Society Organisations Express Concern Over Food Security Ahead of Uganda’s Elections

A coalition of Civil Society Organisations, commonly referred to as CSOs, has collectively voiced significant apprehension regarding the potential for a severe food crisis across Uganda. This critical warning comes at a pivotal moment, as the nation prepares to embark on yet another electoral cycle, a period often associated with various societal shifts and resource reallocations. The CSOs are particularly concerned that the focus on electoral processes might overshadow or exacerbate existing vulnerabilities within the food supply chain, potentially leading to widespread food insecurity and hardship for many Ugandans. Among the prominent organisations leading this advocacy and articulating these concerns are the Food Rights Alliance, known by its acronym FRA, SEATINI Uganda, the Civil Society Budget Advocacy Group, also known as CSBAG, the Centre for Food and Health Rights, CEFROHT, and PELUM Uganda. These groups represent a broad spectrum of expertise in food security, economic justice, and human rights, and their joint statement highlights the urgent need for attention to this critical issue. Their collective statement underscores the need for heightened vigilance and proactive measures from all stakeholders, particularly as the Uganda Electoral Commission oversees the preparations for the upcoming polls, a process that inherently draws national focus and resources, potentially diverting attention from other pressing social and economic challenges like food security.
