President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has unequivocally affirmed the constitutional legality of individuals who choose to contest general elections as independent candidates, particularly after experiencing defeat in their respective party primary elections. The Head of State emphasized that this pathway for political participation is not merely tolerated but is, in fact, explicitly and thoroughly provided for within the Constitution of Uganda, the supreme law of the land. President Museveni underscored that the nation’s foundational legal document offers a clear and unambiguous framework that allows citizens to pursue public office independently, even if they do not emerge victorious from internal party selection processes. This statement from the President serves to clarify and reinforce the constitutional provisions that safeguard the right of individuals to seek electoral mandates outside of established party structures, ensuring that losing in primary elections does not, by any means, disqualify a citizen from presenting themselves to the electorate on an independent ticket, as is distinctly stipulated within the country’s legal framework.
