In a significant policy shift announced by the Secretary to the Treasury, Ramathan Ggoobi, the Government of Uganda has officially declared that it will cease all financial expenditure on the organization of public functions and national holidays effective from July 2026. This major budgetary adjustment will specifically impact the commemoration of several key national events, including International Women’s Day, Labour Day, and Independence Day celebrations. According to the Secretary to the Treasury, the substantial funds that were previously allocated to facilitate these public gatherings will be redirected and prioritized toward financing other critical government sectors and urgent national development priorities. This strategic decision marks a departure from the traditional funding model for public holidays as the administration seeks to streamline its fiscal responsibilities and optimize the allocation of public resources for the upcoming financial years.
