In a recent statement shared via social media, President Yoweri Museveni has drawn critical attention to the long-standing challenges facing Uganda’s economic development. The President pointed out that as far back as 1962, at the dawn of the nation’s independence, a mere nine percent of Ugandan homesteads were actively participating in the formal money economy. Reflecting on the passage of time, President Museveni expressed deep concern that even after nearly seventy years of national sovereignty and various developmental efforts, the percentage of households integrated into the money economy remains at that same nine percent figure. This observation serves as a stark reminder of the persistent structural hurdles that have hindered widespread economic inclusion for the Ugandan population over the last several decades.
